Doggie Facts: Dog’s noses are wet to help them absorb scent chemicals

The mucus on your dog’s nose acts as a great sensory tool – this thin layer of mucus-like material allows them to pick up on certain scents as the mucus will absorb the chemicals.

This is also why dogs often lick their noses – they do so to gather some of the scent particles inside the mouth. The mucus from the nose, laden with scent particles, is carried to the roof of the mouth where Jacobsen’s organ is located – the bit responsible for semiochemical signal detection!

Licking the nose enhances the sense of smell by facilitating the function of Jacobsen’s organ.
